The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management Coalition (TEAM) collaborated to bring the Responsibility Has Its Rewards (RHIR) national campaign to the 2011 NCAA Men's College World Series in Omaha, NE. Enthusiastic college baseball fans from all over the country gathered in Omaha to kick off the inaugural games at the College World Series new home, TD Ameritrade Park.


At College World Series more than 1,500 fans made the Responsibility Has Its Rewards pledge, autographed a larger-than-life graffiti board and received a souvenir photo with a branded frame including the campaign partner logos and the campaign's responsibility message.

TEAM spread its message of responsible fan behavior by encouraging fans to "Be a Champion" and make the pledge to:

  • Always Buckle Up- Every Trip, Every Time
  • Always Have a Designated Driver
  • Never Drive Drunk
  • Never Provide Alcohol to Anyone Under 21

These responsible fans were the lucky daily ticket winners to the College World Series.

WHAT: NCAA and TEAM invited fans to make the Responsibility Has Its Rewards pledge to
  • Always Have A Designated Driver
  • Never Drive Drunk
  • Always Buckle Up Every Trip Every Time
  • Never Provide Alcohol to Anyone Under 21
In addition to receiving a souvenir photo, fans autographed a giant graffiti board to represent their favorite team. Fans who made the pledge were entered into a random drawing to win a pair of tickets to a game courtesy of the NCAA.

US DOT / NHTSA 2009 NATIONAL DATA:
  • In 2009, 10,839 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related (BAC > 0.08) car crashes, a decline of 8% from the 11,773 fatalities in 2007
  • Many, if not most of those lives would have been saved if people did not drive when they were impaired by alcohol or if they used sober, designated drivers or if they simply wore their seat belts.
  • Statistics and research clearly show that 21-34 year old males are the demographic most likely to be involved in an automobile crash, drive when impaired by alcohol, and fail to buckle up.
