WHERE: Inaugural EagleBank Bowl in Washington, DC
WHEN: Saturday, December 20, 2008
US DOT / NHTSA 2007 NATIONAL DATA:
- In 2007, 12,998 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related (BAC > 0.08) car crashes, a decline of 3.7% from the 13,491 fatalities in 2006
- Many, if not most of those lives would have been saved if people did not drive when they were impaired by alcohol or if they used sober, designated drivers or if they simply wore their seat belts.
- Statistics and research clearly show that 21-34 year old males are the demographic most likely to be involved in an automobile crash, drive when impaired by alcohol, and fail to buckle up.
EagleBank Bowl:
The DC Bowl Committee, Inc. was formed as a community and charitable organization to host the first-ever NCAA-sanctioned, post-season bowl game in Washington, DC. On September 10, 2008 the dream became a reality when the EagleBank Bowl officially became a part of the D.C. sports and entertainment landscape. While the DC Bowl Committee brought the game to the region there are two other entities that are valued contributors in making this game a marquee event. The DC Sports and Entertainment Commission has been a valued partner from the very beginning. When EagleBank signed on as a title sponsor it gave the game instant credibility particularly in the business community. The game kicks off the 2008 bowl season on Saturday, December 20th, at RFK Stadium live on ESPN. The goals for bringing the game to Washington include boosting the regional economy, putting the nation’s capital on the map as a college football destination and to raise money for several local charities.
TEAM Coalition: an alliance of professional and collegiate sports, entertainment facilities,
concessionaires, stadium service partners, the beer industry, broadcasters, governmental traffic
safety experts, and others working together to promote responsible drinking and positive fan behavior
at sports and entertainment facilities. www.teamcoalition.org
WRAP: Founded in 1982, WRAP is an award-winning, public-private partnership working to prevent drunk driving and underage drinking in the Washington-metropolitan area. Through public education, innovative health education programs and advocacy, WRAP is credited with keeping the metro-Washington area's alcohol-related traffic deaths consistently lower than the national average. WRAP, however, may best be known to area residents via the organization's popular free cab ride service for would-be drunk drivers, SoberRide. www.wrap.org/
